The Sahitya Akademi (India’s National Academy of Letters) announced the Yuva Puraskar for 23 writers and Bal Sahitya Puraskar for 24 authors across 24 Indian languages for 2025.

About Sahitya Akademi:

Sahitya Akademi is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

It was established in 1952 and formally inaugurated in 1954.

It was registered in 1956 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.

The head office is located in New Delhi, with regional offices in Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, and Agartala.

It works in 24 languages — 22 from the 8th Schedule + English and Rajasthani.

Governance and Structure:

The General Council is the policy-making body of the Akademi.

It is headed by a President, and assisted by a Vice President, Financial Advisor, and Secretary.

The Akademi functions independently but receives funding from the Government of India.

Functions of Sahitya Akademi:

Promotes inter-lingual literary dialogue and mutual translation of works.

Publishes journals, monographs, and histories of literature in Indian languages.

Organises literary events, including seminars, festivals, and writers’ meets across India.

Publishes the bi-monthly journal ‘Indian Literature’, featuring works in translation.

Sahitya Akademi Awards:

Instituted in 1954, awarded annually for outstanding literary works in any of the 24 recognised languages.

It is the second-highest literary award in India, after the Jnanpith Award.

Awards are given for original creative or critical works published in the last 5 years.

Each award includes a cash prize, copper plaque, and citation.

The selection involves language-specific advisory boards and Executive Board approval.

Translation Awards:

Total of 24 Translation Awards are conferred every year.

Given for translations from and into any of the 24 recognised languages.

Aimed at enhancing cross-linguistic accessibility to Indian literature.

Bhasha Samman:

Awarded for contribution to unrecognised or tribal languages and classical/medieval literature.

Acknowledges work in preservation of dying languages and traditional literary forms.

Fellowships:

The Akademi offers prestigious Anand Coomaraswamy and Premchand Fellowships.

Eminent writers may be elected as Fellows or Honorary Fellows of the Akademi.

Fellowships are awarded to both Indian and international scholars.

Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar:

Instituted in 2011, it recognises young writers aged 35 or below.

Awarded for original and creative works in any of the 24 languages.

Award includes ₹50,000, an engraved copper plaque, and a citation.

Eligible work must be published in the last 5 years and be at least 49 pages long.

Only one award per author per language is allowed.

Ineligible works: Translations, abridgements, theses, e-books, posthumous works, and works by NRIs, PIOs, or dual citizens.

Selection involves public call, referee screening, language jury, and Executive Board approval.

Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar:

Instituted in 2010 to honour children’s literature for readers aged 9 to 16.

Award includes ₹50,000, an engraved plaque, a shawl, and a citation.

Work must be original, creative, and published within 5 years.

At least 3 eligible entries are needed per language for award consideration.

Myth adaptations are allowed; posthumous works eligible if author died within 5-year window.

Ineligible works: Translations, anthologies, abridgements, theses, and works by Board members, Fellows, or Bhasha Samman awardees.

जनरल काउंसिल अकादमी की मुख्य नीति-निर्धारण इकाई है।

भाषाओं के मध्य साहित्यिक संवाद को प्रोत्साहित करना और अनुवाद कार्यों को बढ़ावा देना।

साहित्यिक पत्रिकाएं, मोनोग्राफ्स, और साहित्य इतिहास प्रकाशित करना।

साहित्यिक सम्मेलनों, कविता पाठ, तथा रचनात्मक आयोजनों का आयोजन करना।

अकादमी ‘इंडियन लिटरेचर’ नामक द्वैमासिक पत्रिका का प्रकाशन करती है।

साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार:

यह पुरस्कार 1954 में आरंभ किया गया और यह प्रतिवर्ष दिया जाता है।

यह उन रचनाओं को दिया जाता है जो 24 मान्यता प्राप्त भाषाओं में साहित्यिक उत्कृष्टता को दर्शाती हैं।

यह भारत का दूसरा सर्वोच्च साहित्यिक सम्मान है, ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार के बाद।

भाषा सम्मान:

यह पुरस्कार गैर-मान्यता प्राप्त भाषाओं या शास्त्रीय/मध्यकालीन साहित्य में योगदान हेतु दिया जाता है।

यह जनजातीय भाषाओं की सुरक्षा तथा परंपरागत साहित्यिक स्वरूपों को सम्मानित करता है।

फेलोशिप्स:

अकादमी द्वारा आनंद कूमारस्वामी तथा प्रेमचंद फेलोशिप्स प्रदान की जाती हैं।

प्रसिद्ध लेखकों को फेलो या मानद फेलो के रूप में चयनित किया जाता है।

फेलोशिप्स भारतीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय लेखकों दोनों को दी जाती हैं।

युवा पुरस्कार:

2011 में आरंभ किया गया यह पुरस्कार 35 वर्ष या उससे कम उम्र के लेखकों को दिया जाता है।

यह 24 भाषाओं में मौलिक रचनात्मक कृतियों को सम्मानित करता है।

पुरस्कार में ₹50,000 नकद, तांबे की पट्टिका, और एक प्रशस्ति पत्र शामिल हैं।

कृति पिछले 5 वर्षों में प्रकाशित होनी चाहिए और कम से कम 49 पृष्ठों की हो।

एक लेखक को प्रति भाषा केवल एक बार यह पुरस्कार दिया जा सकता है।

अनुचित कृतियाँ: अनुवाद, संक्षिप्तीकरण, शोधप्रबंध, ई-बुक्स, मरणोपरांत कृतियाँ, NRI या दोहरी नागरिकता वाले लेखकों की रचनाएं।

चयन प्रक्रिया: सार्वजनिक आमंत्रण, विशेषज्ञ मूल्यांकन, तीन-सदस्यीय जूरी, फिर कार्यकारी बोर्ड की स्वीकृति।

बाल साहित्य पुरस्कार:

2010 में आरंभ किया गया यह पुरस्कार 9 से 16 वर्ष आयु समूह के लिए लिखा गया बाल साहित्य सम्मानित करता है।

पुरस्कार में ₹50,000 नकद, पट्टिका, शॉल, और प्रशस्ति पत्र शामिल हैं।

कृति को मौलिक, सृजनात्मक और 5 वर्षों के भीतर प्रकाशित होना चाहिए।

एक भाषा में पुरस्कार के लिए कम से कम 3 योग्य पुस्तकें आवश्यक हैं।

पौराणिक कहानियों का रूपांतरण स्वीकार्य है; मरणोपरांत कृतियाँ मान्य हैं यदि लेखक का निधन 5 वर्षों के भीतर हुआ हो।

अनुचित कृतियाँ: अनुवाद, संकलन, संक्षिप्तीकरण, शोधप्रबंध, तथा बोर्ड सदस्यों, फेलो या भाषा सम्मान विजेताओं द्वारा लिखी कृतियाँ।
