Hariprasad Chaurasia:

Born: 1 July 1938, in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh.

Instrument & Style: A world-renowned maestro of the bansuri (Indian bamboo flute), belonging to the Hindustani classical tradition.

Training & Early Life:

Initially trained in vocal music at the age of 15 under Pandit Raja Ram.

Inspired by Pandit Bholanath of Varanasi, he began learning the flute.

Trained under Bholanath for 8 years, later joined All India Radio in Cuttack and Mumbai.

Became a disciple of Annapurna Devi, who made him relearn flute left-handed as a sign of dedication.

Musical Contributions:

Co-founded the duo Shiv–Hari with Santoor maestro Shivkumar Sharma.

Composed music for Hindi films like “Silsila”, “Chandni”, and others.

Released the iconic album “Call of the Valley” (1968), a blend of Indian classical and modern elements.

Collaborated with international musicians like John McLaughlin and Jan Garbarek.

Played on The Beatles’ “The Inner Light” and George Harrison’s “Wonderwall Music” album.

Teaching & Legacy:

Established Vrindavan Gurukuls in Mumbai (2006) and Bhubaneshwar (2010) to promote the guru-shishya tradition.

Serves as Artistic Director at the World Music Department, Rotterdam Music Conservatory, Netherlands.

15 वर्ष की आयु में पंडित राजा राम से गायन की शिक्षा प्राप्त की।

बाद में पंडित भोलनाथ (वाराणसी) से प्रेरित होकर बांसुरी वादन की ओर अग्रसर हुए।

उन्होंने भोलनाथ से 8 वर्षों तक बांसुरी का अभ्यास किया और फिर आकाशवाणी, कटक और बाद में मुंबई में कार्य किया।

सुप्रसिद्ध गुरु अन्नपूर्णा देवी से उन्नत शिक्षा प्राप्त की, जिन्होंने उन्हें बाएं हाथ से बांसुरी बजाना सिखाया – जो समर्पण का प्रतीक था।

संगीत में योगदान:

शिव–हरी जोड़ी के सह-संस्थापक (संतूर वादक पं. शिवकुमार शर्मा के साथ)।
