Birbal Sahni was an Indian botanist, educationalist and renowned geologist.

On November 14, 1891, he was born in Bhera, a West Punjab town now part of Pakistan.

In 1914, he began his research under the tutelage of A.C Steward, a renowned paleobotanist of the day.

In 1919, he received a D.Sc. for his study on fossil plants.

On his return to India in 1919, Birbal Sahni was appointed as a natural science teacher at Banaras Hindu University.

In 1933, he was promoted to a senior member of the Lucknow University Faculty of Science. I

In 1936, he was named an individual of the Royal Society of London, the most prestigious scientific distinction in the United Kingdom.

He was honoured with the prestigious “Padmashree” in 1973 and “Padmabhushan” in 1976 for his outstanding contributions to Anthropology.

He was the first Indian scientist who worked on Palaeobotany.

He was the first person to establish India’s first laboratory for taxonomic research at Lucknow.

In his honour, the Birbal Gold Award is given to the best botanist in the country regularly.

बीरबल साहनी

बीरबल साहनी एक भारतीय वनस्पतिशास्त्री, शिक्षाविद् और प्रसिद्ध भूविज्ञानी थे।

14 नवंबर, 1891 को उनका जन्म पश्चिमी पंजाब के शहर भेरा में हुआ था, जो अब पाकिस्तान का हिस्सा है।

1914 में, उन्होंने उस समय के प्रसिद्ध पैलियोबोटानिस्ट ए.सी. स्टीवर्ड के संरक्षण में अपना शोध शुरू किया।

1919 में, उन्होंने जीवाश्म पौधों पर अपने अध्ययन के लिए डी.एस.सी. की उपाधि प्राप्त की।

1919 में भारत लौटने पर, बीरबल साहनी को बनारस हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय में प्राकृतिक विज्ञान शिक्षक के रूप में नियुक्त किया गया।

1933 में, उन्हें लखनऊ विश्वविद्यालय के विज्ञान संकाय के वरिष्ठ सदस्य के रूप में पदोन्नत किया गया।

1936 में, उन्हें यूनाइटेड किंगडम में सबसे प्रतिष्ठित वैज्ञानिक सम्मान, रॉयल सोसाइटी ऑफ़ लंदन का सदस्य नामित किया गया।

मानव विज्ञान में उनके उत्कृष्ट योगदान के लिए उन्हें 1973 में प्रतिष्ठित “पद्मश्री” और 1976 में “पद्मभूषण” से सम्मानित किया गया।

वे पहले भारतीय वैज्ञानिक थे जिन्होंने पैलियोबॉटनी पर काम किया।

वे लखनऊ में टैक्सोनोमिक शोध के लिए भारत की पहली प्रयोगशाला स्थापित करने वाले पहले व्यक्ति थे।

उनके सम्मान में, देश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ वनस्पतिशास्त्री को नियमित रूप से बीरबल गोल्ड अवार्ड दिया जाता है।
