Why in News?
-
India achieved a significant milestone in its domestic air defence capabilities when it successfully carried out a high-altitude test of the Akash Prime missile system in Ladakh.
Concerning the Akash Prime Missile System:
What is Akash Prime?
-
The DRDO-developed Akash Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) has been improved into Akash Prime.
-
It is specifically made to function in low-oxygen, high-altitude settings, strengthening India’s air defence in mountainous areas.
-
Created by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Bharat Electronics Limited and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
Goal:
-
To eliminate high-altitude aerial threats like drones, enemy planes, and cruise missiles, especially along India’s delicate border regions like Ladakh and Sikkim.
Important Attributes:
Altitude Capability:
-
Demonstrated effectiveness during trials in Ladakh at 15,000 feet.
Technology Seekers:
-
Accurate target lock is guaranteed by an indigenous active radar seeker.
Mobility:
-
Installed on movable platforms for rapid, flexible deployment across various terrains.
Guidance:
-
A hybrid system that combines terminal active homing and command guidance.
Speed and Range:
-
Has a maximum strike range of 30 km and travels at Mach 2.5.
Every Weather Performance:
-
Works dependably in low-density air and extremely cold temperatures.
Kill Probability:
-
In single missile mode, the kill probability is 88%; in dual-salvo mode, it can reach 98.5%.
Importance for Indian Defence:
High-Altitude Operations:
-
Designed specifically for the mountainous border regions of India (such as LAC).
Enhances Self-Reliance:
-
A system that is entirely indigenous and part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission.
Cost-effective Solution:
-
Reduces import expenses while boosting domestic defence manufacturing.
