Kallada River is a west-flowing river located in the southern part of Kerala, India.

It originates from the Western Ghats, specifically near Ponmudi Hills in Pathanapuram taluk, Kollam district.

The river flows through the districts of Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha before draining into the Ashtamudi Lake.

Ashtamudi Lake, into which Kallada empties, is connected to the Arabian Sea, making it part of a backwater system.

The total length of the river is approximately 121 km, making it one of the important rivers in South Kerala.

Major tributaries include Kalthuruthipuzha, Kulathupuzha, and Chendurunipuzha.

Kallada Irrigation Project (KIP) is the largest irrigation project in Kerala based on this river, aiming to irrigate over 61,000 hectares.

The river is also home to the Thenmala Dam, India’s first eco-tourism project site, located in the foothills of the Western Ghats.

The Kallada region has rich biodiversity, especially due to the river flowing through parts of the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary.

The river has religious importance due to the Kallada Boat Race, held annually during Onam at Munroe Island.

कल्लड़ा नदी

कल्लड़ा नदी एक पश्चिम की ओर बहने वाली नदी है, जो भारत के केरल राज्य के दक्षिणी भाग में स्थित है।

इसका उद्गम पश्चिमी घाट की पोनमुडी पहाड़ियों से होता है, जो कोल्लम जिले के पठानापुरम तालुक में है।

यह नदी कोल्लम, पथानमथिट्टा, और आलाप्पुझा जिलों से होकर बहती है और अष्टमुडी झील में मिलती है।

अष्टमुडी झील, जहाँ यह नदी मिलती है, अरब सागर से जुड़ी है, जिससे यह बैकवाटर प्रणाली का हिस्सा बनती है।

इस नदी की कुल लंबाई लगभग 121 किमी है, जिससे यह दक्षिण केरल की प्रमुख नदियों में गिनी जाती है।

इसकी प्रमुख सहायक नदियाँ हैं: कल्लथुरुथिपुझा, कुलथुपुझा, और चेंदुरुणिपुझा।

इस नदी पर आधारित कल्लड़ा सिंचाई परियोजना (KIP), केरल की सबसे बड़ी सिंचाई परियोजना है, जो 61,000 हेक्टेयर से अधिक भूमि को सींचती है।

इस नदी पर बना है थेन्मला बांध, जो भारत की पहली ईको-टूरिज़्म परियोजना के रूप में प्रसिद्ध है और पश्चिमी घाट की तलहटी में स्थित है।

यह नदी शेंदुरुणी वन्यजीव अभयारण्य से होकर बहती है, जिससे यह क्षेत्र समृद्ध जैव विविधता वाला बनता है।

इस नदी का सांस्कृतिक महत्व भी है, विशेषकर ओणम के अवसर पर आयोजित होने वाली कल्लड़ा नाव दौड़, जो मुन्नार द्वीप पर होती है।
