Prof. U R Rao was born in a remote village of Karnataka in 1932.

He began his career as a cosmic-ray physicist and was a student of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai.

After completing his doctorate, Prof. Rao worked in the US, including as a Faculty Member at MIT and Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas.

On returning to India in 1966, he initiated a high-energy astronomy program at the Physical Research Laboratory.

He was Chairman of the Governing Council of the Physical Research Laboratory and Chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology.

Prof. Rao was instrumental in establishing satellite technology in India starting in 1972.

Under his leadership, over 18 satellites were designed and launched, including the first Indian satellite, ‘Aryabhata’ in 1975.

From 1984 to 1994, he served as Chairman of ISRO and accelerated rocket technology development.

His work led to the successful launch of the ASLV rocket and the operational PSLV launch vehicle.

Prof. Rao was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1976 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2017, and was inducted into the “Satellite Hall of Fame” and “IAF Hall of Fame.”

उडुपी रामचंद्र राव

प्रो. यू.आर. राव का जन्म 1932 में कर्नाटक के एक सुदूर गाँव में हुआ था।

उन्होंने अपना करियर कॉस्मिक-रे भौतिक विज्ञानी के रूप में शुरू किया और डॉ. विक्रम साराभाई के छात्र थे।

डॉक्टरेट पूरा करने के बाद, प्रो. राव ने अमेरिका में काम किया, जिसमें एमआईटी में संकाय सदस्य और डलास में टेक्सास विश्वविद्यालय में सहायक प्रोफेसर के रूप में शामिल थे।

1966 में भारत लौटने पर, उन्होंने भौतिक अनुसंधान प्रयोगशाला में एक उच्च-ऊर्जा खगोल विज्ञान कार्यक्रम शुरू किया।

वे भौतिक अनुसंधान प्रयोगशाला की शासी परिषद के अध्यक्ष और भारतीय अंतरिक्ष विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान के कुलाधिपति थे।

प्रो. राव ने 1972 से भारत में उपग्रह प्रौद्योगिकी की स्थापना में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई।

उनके नेतृत्व में, 18 से अधिक उपग्रहों को डिज़ाइन और लॉन्च किया गया, जिसमें 1975 में पहला भारतीय उपग्रह, ‘आर्यभट्ट’ भी शामिल था।

1984 से 1994 तक, उन्होंने इसरो के अध्यक्ष के रूप में कार्य किया और रॉकेट प्रौद्योगिकी विकास को गति दी।

उनके काम की बदौलत एएसएलवी रॉकेट और ऑपरेशनल पीएसएलवी लॉन्च व्हीकल का सफल प्रक्षेपण संभव हो सका।

प्रो. राव को 1976 में पद्म भूषण और 2017 में पद्म विभूषण से सम्मानित किया गया और उन्हें “सैटेलाइट हॉल ऑफ फेम” और “आईएएफ हॉल ऑफ फेम” में शामिल किया गया।
